President Biden recently announced his intent to nominate Jenny Lester Moffitt at the next USDA Undersecretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs.  If confirmed, Moffitt would oversee Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) as part of her duties.  APHIS is responsible for enforcement of the Horse Protection Act.

Moffitt currently serves as the undersecretary at the California Department of Food and Agriculture, a position she has held since February 2018.  Before Moffitt joined the CDFA, she ran her family’s organic walnut farm and processing operation in Winters, Calif.

In a statement, Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack stated, “Jenny says growing up and working on the farm solidified the importance of taking care of the land and the people who farm it.  If confirmed, Jenny will join a mission area that is focused on facilitating the domestic and international marketing of U.S. agricultural products, ensuring the health and care of animals and plants, and setting national and international standards – all tasks that she is well suited to take on.”
