Equine Obituary – Pushin' That Jazz
Wednesday, July 19, 2023

Pushin’ That Jazz was humanely euthanized on July 17th, 2023, at 25 years of age. A perennial showring favorite, PTJ amassed an impressive show record which included 77 career wins with eight world championships, one world grand championship, six reserve world championships and four reserve world grand championships.
PTJ began winning blue ribbons as a two-year-old and was successfully shown until he won his last blue ribbon at the age of 18. He carried numerous riders to wins including Joe Martin, Sarah Dunn, Laura Brandon, Dalia Smith-Harr, Robert Cortner, Courtney Luttrell, Mike Hilley, Kenny Compton, Joe Cotten and Tim Smith. Numerous trainers guided PTJ to wins, including Joe Martin, Mike Hilley, Herbert Derickson, Joe Cotton, Brandye Mills, and Tim Smith – a testament to what a great horse PTJ was.
PTJ lived out his golden years at Buzzard View Stables in Manchester, Kentucky, under the ownership of the Kenny Smith family where he enjoyed being turned out in the round pen each day, but only for about 10 minutes, then he wanted back in the barn and snacking on his favorite treat, peppermint candy.
PTJ was a once in a lifetime horse. To quote Samuel Riddle, “there is no other feeling in the world to compare with it if one loves a great horse. It gives a thrill that nothing else ever can. It cannot be put into words because words cannot express it.”
