Helen Pike Utter, 87, died Nov. 8, 2000, at her home in Akron, Ind., after an extended illness.

She is survived by three children; Channing Utter of Akron, Ind., Kay Brown of Decatur, Ind., and Lynn Northrop of Huntingdon, Ind.; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Virginia York of Akron, Ind. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard M. Utter.

She and her husband founded Pike Lumber Co. with offices in Akron and Carbon, Ind. Mrs. Utter was a founder of Akron’s Psi Kappa chapter of Kappa Delta Phi sorority, a member of Akron United Methodist Church and a graduate of Indiana University’s School of Business.

A long-time member of the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders' and Exhibitors' Association, her family owned many legendary horses including multi-titled world champions, Mr. Delight H and Royal Label. She rode Mr. Wilson’s Major to world championship honors in 1976 and 1980.

Services were held Nov. 11 at the Akron United Methodist Church with burial in Akron Cemetery.
