The Purchase Area Horseman’s Association Awards Banquet was held on December 8th at the Hearth Restaurant in Martin, Tennessee. The evening began with a social hour at six o’ clock followed by dinner at seven. A delicious meal which included turkey and dressing, country ham, and all the trimmings was enjoyed by the large crowd in attendance.

Kenny Ward, Purchase Area Association president, served as master of ceremonies. He gave a year end report and urged members to participate in a membership drive. The goal for 2001 members was met and a new goal was presented for the year 2002.

The association sponsors a highly successful horse show, The Purchase Area Charity Horse Show, held on the campus of the University of Tennessee at Martin. Ward reported that the 2001 show was once again a success with 243 entries. He thanked the officials and many volunteers who make the event possible. The date for the 2002 show is April 5. Officers for the year 2002 are Kenny Ward, president; Frankie Spillman, vice-president; Liz Mills, secretary; and Evelyn Ward, treasurer.

Larry Stewart spoke to the group about an organization recently founded. Stewart and his wife Joanna are involved in THIS ( This Horse Is Silent ). It is an organization set up to help equine families in need, lending a helping hand to the family, addressing their specific needs, and then they quietly leave.

First on the agenda of the awards was the recognition of World Champions and World Grand Champions that are owned by Purchase Area members. High point and reserve high point winners were presented with beautiful crystal bowls. Voted awards were also presented. Following the awards an auction was held. Many items were available for bidding including homemade desserts, equine gifts, country hams, and an assortment of Christmas decorations.
