The SHOW HIO will host a farrier seminar January 9 at the Calsonic Arena in Shelbyville, Tenn.  This seminar will be open to all farriers, trainers and owners in the walking horse industry. Guest speakers will include Dr. Tracy Turner, a practicing AAEP veterinarian/farrier who works closely with the USDA and Andrew Elsbree who is an active equine farrier from New York and a past president of the American Farrier Association.

Others attending the meeting will be representatives of the USDA and SHOW, including Leigh Bennett who recently agreed to head the rewriting of the SHOW rulebook.

Topics which will be discussed in the Farrier Seminar include but are not limited to:

TWH hoof health issues—both past issues, current issues and future issues. In this phase we will cover such topics as what can be done to both prevent and treat contracted heels during the off season and during the active show season. What can correct trimming and shoeing have to do with lessening the threat of scar rule violations?

Farrier Certification programs – How can a certification program for farriers help to alleviate some HPA violations?  How can becoming a certified farrier stimulate business in the TWH industry? What are the requirements to become certified?

New shoeing rules in 2010 - What new rules are going to be in the revised SHOW rule book that deal with shoes, pads, and farriers?  What should a farrier know when he prepares a horse for the 2010 show season.
