Equine Obituary – Gus Malzahn
Sunday, February 23, 2020
Gus Malzahn passed away February 23, 2020 in his stall at Price Stables. Sired by The Coach out of a Jose’ Jose’ mare, Gus Malzahn was foaled on May 10, 2012.
Under the ownership of LaRue McWaters, the stallion started his career as a two-year-old and immediately caught the attention of Rodney Dick. Within no time the partnership of Jo Ann Dowell and Susan Coleman were the new owners and the wins began to rack up.
In 2016 Buddy Dick and Gus Malzahn were on fire as one of the top four-year-old teams earning wins at Manchester, Columbia, Woodbury and the Walking For The Angels show.
After the passing of Buddy in 2017, Rodney took over the reins aboard Gus Malzahn capturing win after win. The final performance for the champion was at the Walking For The Angels show this past season where Susan Coleman directed him to the Trainers’ Auxiliary Members win.
Just a few short weeks ago Sarah Coffee Burks was thrilled to be able to add him to her great string of show ring contenders. Plans were already in motion for Gus Malzahn to team up with Nick Price and make a go at the 2020 World Grand Championship.
Gus Malzahn will be deeply missed by all that loved him.
