Obituary-Calvin L. Baird Sr.

Calvin L. Baird, Sr., 79, of Simpsonville, Ky., died Sunday October 19, 2003 at his residence. Mr. Baird was the founder of Metal Sales Manufacturing Corporation, a member of Simpsonville United Methodist Church, Kentucky Walking Horse Association, Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders Association and a former member of Hurstbourne Country Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Margaret Augusta Yeager. Survivors include his son, Calvin L. Baird, Jr.; two daughters, Betty Baird Kregor and Genevieve Lacer; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Dr. R.B. Baird Jr. The funeral service was held at Simpsonville United Methodist Church, with burial in Grove Hill Cemetery. Pearson-Ratterman Bros. was in charge of arrangements. Memorial gifts may be made to Mr. Baird’s church or Hospice of Louisville.

Stephen Vaden, a native of Union City, Tennessee, was confirmed as deputy secretary of agriculture on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, by a vote of 51 to 44 on the Senate floor. Vaden currently serves as a judge on the U.S. Court of International Trade and will transition to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. President Donald Trump nominated Vaden for the post on Dec. 22, 2024.
