In a letter dated April 28, 2014, Senators Lamar Alexander (R-TN) and Mitch McConnell (R-KY) sent a request to their colleagues to support legislation they introduced to eliminate soring in the Tennessee Walking Horse industry. The letter outlines the use of state officials and experts to ensure consistent oversight, objective, science-based exams to eliminate soring, prevention of conflicts of interest, input from veterinarians and suspension of horses found to be sore.
The legislation stands in contrast to legislation championed by the Humane Society of the United States that would expand the USDA's jurisdiction and increase the size and role of the federal government.
