I would like to thank those of you who are participating in this program and encourage everyone else to let a young rider in your barn learn to canter. All kids are eligible, they don’t have to own the horse, and they can show a different horse in every class. The reward is twofold: youth are rewarded for achieving excellence and the industry perpetuates the third gait known as the “rocking chair” canter. And the prize money is great- $250, $100, $75, $50, $25!

The canter is the gait of emphasis and is judged on the rider’s ability to canter the horse correctly. consistently, and completely both ways of the ring. The flat walk and running walk are judged according to NHSC rules, but are secondary in importance.

• Open to all youth riders, age 17 and under (age is determined as of Jan. 1).

• Ownership of the horse is not required. Stallions are not allowed.

• The championship is held at the National Futurity. Qualify by showing in at least one TWHBEA Youth Medallion Class during the current season.

• The goal of the rider is to accumulate points throughout the year to claim high point honors. Double points will be awarded at multi-day shows, the Medallion Championship, and any show with more than 10 entries in the Medallion Class.

• The High Point Rider will receive a $1,000 college scholarship and his/her name will be placed on a permanent plaque at TWHBEA headquarters. In addition. Walking Horse Chat will award a five-year subscription and a personal web page designed by Grand Champion Graphix.

Hope to see you on the rail during a Medallion Class! Please call me if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Joni Jenne’
