The number of U.S. Internet users skyrocketed to an all-time high, rising 15% from 100.3 million surfers in October 2000 to more than 115.2 million in October 2001, according to a report released by Nielsen/NetRatings. The Internet measurement service said people accessing the Web from home contributed significantly to the increase, rising 14% from the previous year to more than 103.7 million surfers.

These figures indicate that people are continuing to conduct business online and find information despite the troubled economy. Analysts have also found that the demographics of web surfers are changing from early adopters to more underrepresented groups, such as minorities and those with lower incomes. Also Nielsen/NetRatings reported that 110.8 million unique users were on the Web in September 2001 as compared to October’s figures that were 115.2. This 4% increase is the largest monthly increase this year.

Walking Horse Report’s Web statistics have demonstrated similar results over the past couple months. During the Celebration in late August, the site experienced traffic at all-time highs. The last week of the Celebration saw over 500,000 hits to the Celebration results section alone. Sessions, page views and average session times were at all-time highs as well.

Web advertisement on Walking Horse Report Online has also seen significant growth over the past 12 months. The stallions section on Walking Horse Report Online now has over 110 stallions, by far the most comprehensive Web gathering of stallion advertisement. Also the online calendar and class sheets have seen substantial improvements in advertising opportunities. Over 50 horse shows around the country placed their class sheets online this year in the Report’s online Calendar of Events.

Despite the events of September 11 and the corresponding effects on the economy, Web traffic and opportunities are at all-time highs. The Web’s ability to be a resource for vast amounts of information that people previously did not have access to has been a great influence in the increase in traffic. This increase in traffic makes advertising in this medium a better decision for many users.
