Walking Horse Amendments Not Included in Farm Bill

The House Rules Committee decided which of the over 100 amendments would be included in the House Farm Bill yesterday and neither the amendments from Rep. Tom Marino nor Rep. Scott DesJarlais will be included in the floor debate.  Marino, along with democrat Steve Cohen from Tennessee had submitted an amendment that would have forced the USDA to publish its proposed rule that would ban the pad and action device from Tennessee Walking Horses as well as abolish the HIO system.

The Smoky Mountain Walking Horse Association is pleased to announce the selection of Allison Hopkins as the recipient of the Jerry Derryberry Memorial Scholarship. Hopkins is a senior at Hancock County High School with plans to attend Mississippi State University with a career goal in business.

Farm Bill Could Impact Walking Horses

While indecision and controversy still exist for the GOP’s Farm Bill, the legislation could hit the house floor this week for a vote.  The main areas of concern lie with the sugar support program and work requirements for food stamps.  The GOP is currently shy of the necessary votes but House Agriculture Committee Chairman Mike Conaway is confident the republicans will get the necessary votes.
