Ronald Eddy Dougan, age 89, of Shelbyville, passed away Wednesday, August 31, 2022, at his home, under the loving care and comfort of his family and Hospice Compassus.

Funeral services will be 12 noon Tuesday, September 6, 2022, at Flat Creek United Methodist Church. Reverend Jim Sorrells will officiate. Burial, with full military honors, will follow in Rose Bank Cemetery, in the Flat Creek Community.

The family will receive visitors 10 AM until service time Tuesday at the church.

He was born April 30, 1933, in Pennsville, Ohio, to the late Dalton Blain and Laura Beatrice Eddy Dougan. He retired from Ohio University where he was supervisor of licensed vehicles. In Ohio, he was a former member of the Tri County School Board and Athens County School Board. When he was living in Ohio, he farmed six hundred acres and ran a dairy farm for 27 years and competed in tractor pulls. A veteran of the United States Army, he served during the Korean War. While stationed in Germany, he was crew chief of the helicopter mechanics. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and DAV.

Moving to Shelbyville in 1994, he became a school bus driver for the Bedford County School system. A real estate entrepreneur, he owned, trained and rode Tennessee Walking horses, winning several World Championships. He held membership in the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders and Exhibitors Association and Pleasure Walking Horses of Tennessee. He also held membership in the Lions Club and Flat Creek United Methodist Church.

In July of this year, at the age of 89, he went skydiving.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son in law, John Shaffer, and brother-in-law, Fred Brake.

Survivors include his wife, Cecilia Cook Dougan of Shelbyville; children, Lynette Starr Jones, and her husband Paul, Steven Craig Dougan, and his wife Katheleen, Tami Dee Dougan, and her husband Chris, and Betsey Faith Shaffer; step children, Tashia Karen Owens, and her husband Mark, D’Anna Sharon Houston, and her husband Dan, and Katrina Dawn Sizemore; a sister, Barbara Dugan Brake; sixteen grandchildren, twenty five great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild; the mother of his children, Colleen Hayes Brickles.

A favorite saying of his was: “You never get a second chance to make a first impression”.

Ron would be honored with memorials made to: Flat Creek United Methodist Church or the DAV.
